Grace Jones: The most copied pop star of all time?

Grace Jones is freakin amazing, she is pure badass. A lot of younger Millennials and Gen Z kids today have no idea who she is, but they should know about her because she was a HUGE influence on many artists, musicians and designers in the 80s to today. People keep ripping off her styles and don’t give her any credit.

Grace Jones’ career spans decades. She epitomised the disco era, then New Wave. She was a mainstay at raucous New York City clubs Studio 54 and Area. The word that always pops up with Jones is “icon”.

Jones herself is uncomfortable with the word “icon”, which is funny because she’s been that for several generations of pop stars in her wake. With her emphasis on her visual presentation, her penchant for constant reinvention and her strikingly androgynous look, Jones has influenced everyone from Madonna to Lady Gaga. And she’s OK with being copied – so long as those she inspires wait a little while before ripping off her looks.

For Talking Movies, Christian Blauvelt spoke with Jones and Sophie Fiennes, the director of a new documentary, Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami, made over 12 years, that captures her experiences performing, on the road, and with her family in Jamaica. i’d hate to be a high schooler in this day and age. i see young ass girls on youtube doing “grwm freshman year” full beat 28 inch wigs and its like……. when i was in high school you’d be lucky if we didnt show up in our pajamas. maybe a lil mascara here n there. idk i just feel bad that there’s so much sexual pressure on these younger girls because of social media

there’s a lot of sexual pressure on women in general so imagine being a young girl and not knowing how to filter through the shit thats constantly being fed to you
